Perry-gliding through life

Summer DrinkMa and Pa Perry are in the house and I've been trying to speed home after work to share in the festivities.  This evening I barely missed the steaks hitting the grill and the first summer beverages sliding across the cool countertop.

It's always fun to fill the house with family!

We settled in for some good cookout, a nice brisk walk and a calm evening at home.  Here's Peter enjoying the captain's chair:

Wu Let the Dogs Out

I jumped at the chance to go hit range balls with Darren and Ben this weekend.  My enthusiasm was partly to see old friends and mostly selfish to spend some time away from the girls.

Broken Golf ClubAt Ben's insistence, I photographed a few shots of him swinging the old golf club.

If these pictures don't capture the raw power of Ben's swing, there is evidence in his golf bag -- which now holds a headless club from this morning.

All told I was glad to get out with the guys even for a short while.

My swing wasn't too bad, probably shouldn't wait so long to go golfing that I have cobwebs all over my bag -- but I got in a few good cracks.

Before too long I was summoned away from the links to go to the mall with Laura and her big sis' Eileen, our special guest of the week.

Since we could not meet all of Leenie's dietary requirements prior to her coming, she brought her own oatmeal:

I'm looking forward to hanging with Eileen and the rest of the Perry clan when they get here on Monday.  Caroline is popular these days!

Rainy Day Experiment

Posted by Andrew

I'm allways looking for something fun around the house to do (and did I mention free).  So when a thunderstorm rolled in this afternoon I decided to conduct a small science experiment.

What happened after that is a little bit of a blur. I was squeezing the exposure button on my camera, then running in front of it waiving my arms and making the dogs go crazy with a cheap LED keychain light.

Blueberry PancakesYou see, most cameras capture a picture in a fraction of a second, slurping up all the light in a room onto it's photo sensor. What I tried to do was extend the time of exposure out to 30 seconds, run in front of the camera, and see if I could write my name backwards with the LED.

I should add you need a pretty dark room for this.  Or I guess you could go outside.

It's a lot of sweat to get a pretty unremarkable result  -- but I still thought it was cool enough to share:

California Trip

Posted by Andrew

This morning I flew home from the left coast and arrived in Charlotte at around 6am.

"Red eye" is an understatement.

Luckily I modified my travel plans so that I could stay with family instead of a hotel.

Blueberry PancakesThe irony is that it was very much like a hotel -- fresh orange juice, blueberry pancakes and frothy made-to-go lattes.

I stayed at Bill & Brenda's Bed, Breakfast and Beerhaus.  There is a nice picture of their place below.

Cost of room and board is an open mind and a willingness to lose at Bocci.  I made that up, but I'm telling you it was luxurious.  I felt completely immune to the stresses that come with travelling on business.

Atherton California

When I wasn't attending meetings I spent time back at the house enjoying the immense variety of plants and trees that clothed the backyard in a cool shade.

I even picked some oranges!

Yesterday, Andrew and I took Caroline to her two-month well visit.  Much to our delight, Caroline is thriving.  She is in the 75th percentile for both height and weight, tipping the scale at a little over 11 pounds and measuring 23 inches.  The doctor even commented on how alert Miss C is and was impressed with her neck and head control.  The little wizard then vomited on dad to show her excitement before taking her five shots like a champ.

Father's Day Gadget

Posted by Andrew

This week I was presented with a shiny new gift for my first father's day.  Timing was perfect because Laura and I had been looking to replace our laptop with our government stimulus check.

I figure my new Ipod isn't as functional as a laptop, but with portable Internet I get to do the same beer in one hand, Internet in the other while watching TV thing.  This, to me, is bliss.

I've been having a ton of fun with this little Internet / Video Player / MP3 Player.  Wife Alert.  Laura says this post is already too long.  OK I am done.

A real life blogger stops by

Our dear friend Gail came over tonight to say hello and play with Caroline.  Gail is the author of Silvermine, #8 in our Top 20 Blog list.  You should definitely check it out.  I've known Gail since many years ago when our families when to church together in Wilton, Connecticut.

Usually I come home from work and toss Caroline over my shoulder and try to calm her down with a few awful dance moves and a pat on the back -- with mixed results.

But Caroline melted into Gails arms...  long enough to where we just ate dinner and Gail watched her for us.

Stop by anytime Gail! She is the closest thing to a baby whisperer I've ever met, that's for sure.

Edging for Beginners

Posted by Andrew

Looking at my Black and Decker re-chargable trimmer, I hung my head and realized there was no way it could do the job.

So I asked my neighbor Jim if I could borrow his edger to trim back the grass taking over our driveway.  About an hour and countless sparks later I'd created a clean line between concrete and nature.

That made for a nice Saturday project, even if a few neighbors stopped by to give me some pointers so I wouldn't cut off my hands with the gas-powered spinning blade.
